Recognizes parent/primary caregiver

What to Expect

Baby shows preference for familiar people, becomes calm when held by parent, watches parent's face intently.

Warning Signs

Does not recognize parent by 3 months; Shows no preference for familiar people; Avoids eye contact

At-Home Strategies

  • Maintain consistent primary caregivers during first months. Baby will learn to recognize faces, voices, and touch patterns of main caregivers.
  • Wear a specific colorful dupatta or bindi regularly so baby can visually identify you along with your voice and scent.
  • When baby cries, respond consistently - they will learn that you come to help and will show preference by calming when you approach.
  • Let baby study your face by holding them close during feeding and talking. They will memorize your features and show recognition by staring intently.
