Cries to communicate needs
What to Expect
Baby uses different types of cries to express hunger, discomfort, or tiredness. Parents learn to distinguish between different cries.
Warning Signs
Very weak cry or no cry; High-pitched continuous cry; Does not respond to loud sounds
At-Home Strategies
- Respond quickly to different cries (hunger, discomfort, tiredness) with specific actions so baby learns crying communicates needs.
- Talk to baby about their crying: "Are you hungry?" or "Your diaper is wet" - this helps them connect crying with getting help.
- Maintain a feeding and sleep routine so you can anticipate needs, but still respond to baby's cries promptly and consistently.
- Comfort crying baby with gentle rocking, patting, or singing lullabies like "Jo achyutananda" to soothe and build trust.
