Looks for dropped objects

What to Expect

Baby looks down when toy falls. Beginning of object permanence - understanding objects exist when not seen.

Warning Signs

Does not look for dropped toy; No reaction when object disappears; No curiosity

At-Home Strategies

  • While baby is watching, slowly drop a colorful toy and say "Oops! Where did it go?" Point down so baby learns to look for fallen objects.
  • Play drop-and-find game with soft toys or cloth. Let baby drop item, then help them look down to find it, retrieving together.
  • When baby drops bottle or toy, make it exciting: "Let's find it!" This teaches object permanence - things still exist when out of sight.
  • During sitting play, let baby practice dropping and looking for objects. Place items within reach so they can retrieve independently with practice.
