Explores objects by mouthing

What to Expect

Baby puts toys and objects in mouth to explore textures and shapes. This is normal sensory exploration.

Warning Signs

Does not mouth objects; No exploration of toys; Not interested in touching things

At-Home Strategies

  • Offer safe, clean household items with different textures - soft cloth, smooth wooden spoon, textured steel cup - for baby to mouth and explore.
  • Provide clean teething toys or chilled banana wrapped in cloth for baby to mouth. This is normal sensory exploration, not just teething.
  • Ensure all toys and objects are clean and safe for mouthing. Wash regularly with warm water as baby will explore everything this way.
  • Offer items of different temperatures (room temperature, slightly cool) so baby experiences variety through oral exploration.
