Smiles at mirror image

What to Expect

Baby smiles and shows interest when seeing reflection in mirror. Beginning of self-awareness.

Warning Signs

No interest in mirror; Does not look at own reflection; No recognition of self

At-Home Strategies

  • Hold baby in front of a steel plate or mirror and point: "Look! Who is that? That's you!" Smile together at the reflection.
  • Play peek-a-boo in the mirror - hide behind baby, then pop up in reflection saying "Peek-a-boo!" to create joyful mirror play.
  • Place stickers or small bindis on baby's forehead, then show them in mirror. Watch them try to touch their own face or the reflection.
  • Make funny faces together in mirror - stick tongue out, open mouth wide. Baby will smile and may try to imitate expressions.
