What to Expect
When on tummy, baby can lift and hold head steady at 45-degree angle for several seconds. Shows improved neck strength.
Warning Signs
No head control by 3 months; Head wobbles constantly; Cannot support any weight on legs
At-Home Strategies
- Place baby on tummy and shake a ghungroo (ankle bells) or rattle at eye level to encourage them to lift and hold head up.
- During tummy time, place a steel plate or utensil in front so baby can see their reflection, encouraging them to lift head higher.
- Carry baby in upright position on your shoulder during household work, allowing them to practice head control while watching activities.
- Place baby on a firm pillow at slight incline during tummy time. Put colorful bangles or toys ahead to encourage head lifting.
- Sit with baby between your legs facing away, support at waist, and let them practice holding head up for a few seconds at a time.
