Reaches for and grabs toys

What to Expect

Baby intentionally reaches out to grab toys or objects. Shows good hand-eye coordination.

Warning Signs

Does not reach for toys by 7 months; Cannot grasp objects; Drops everything immediately

At-Home Strategies

  • Hold colorful toys or household items (plastic cups, wooden ladles) just out of reach to motivate baby to reach forward and grab.
  • String soft cloth toys or rattles across baby's play area at arm's reach, encouraging them to reach out and grasp items.
  • Sit baby in supported position with toys spread in front. Encourage reaching by saying "Get the ball!" or "Touch the bell!"
  • Play with objects of different sizes and textures - plastic rings, soft toys, textured balls - to practice different types of grasping.
