Motor
0-6 months
Rolls both ways (front to back and back to front)
What to Expect
Baby can roll in both directions. Uses rolling to move around and explore.
Warning Signs
Cannot roll at all by 7 months; Very stiff movements; One side weaker than other
At-Home Strategies
- Create a safe floor space with a firm mat. Place toys on alternating sides to encourage baby to roll in both directions to reach them.
- When baby is on back, gently guide their leg across their body to initiate rolling motion. Let them complete the roll themselves.
- Lay baby on a slightly sloped surface (like your legs while sitting) which makes rolling easier and builds confidence for independent rolling.
- Provide plenty of floor time in safe area. Remove pillows and soft bedding that could prevent baby from practicing rolling movements freely.
