Sits with support

What to Expect

Baby can sit up with support from pillows or when held. Cannot sit independently yet but has good head control.

Warning Signs

Cannot sit even with support by 6 months; Head flops forward; No trunk control

At-Home Strategies

  • Place baby in sitting position with pillows arranged in a U-shape around them for support. Stay close and supervise.
  • Sit baby on your lap facing outward, supporting them at waist. This lets them practice trunk control in a safe supported position.
  • Prop baby in sitting position against a nursing pillow or rolled blanket. Place interesting toys in front to motivate them to stay upright.
  • Practice supported sitting for 5-10 minutes multiple times daily. Gradually reduce support as baby's back and neck muscles strengthen.
