Motor
0-6 months
Rolls from tummy to back
What to Expect
Baby can roll from stomach to back position. This shows developing core strength and coordination.
Warning Signs
Cannot roll by 6 months; Very stiff when held; Does not push up on arms
At-Home Strategies
- During tummy time, place an interesting toy to baby's side. This encourages them to reach and naturally roll over to their back.
- Place baby on a firm mat on the floor (not on soft bed) for tummy time, giving them stable surface to practice pushing and rolling.
- Gently help baby practice rolling by placing hand on their hip and assisting the roll motion while they are on tummy. Do this 2-3 times daily.
- Increase tummy time to 15-20 minutes per day spread across multiple sessions to build the core strength needed for rolling.
