Shows interest in faces

What to Expect

Baby is fascinated by human faces, especially parent's face. Stares at faces for long periods.

Warning Signs

No interest in faces; Does not focus on anything; Seems to look through people

At-Home Strategies

  • Hold baby at arm's length facing you (optimal distance for newborns is 8-12 inches) and let them study your face for several minutes.
  • Show baby photos of family members faces, pointing to features like eyes, nose, mouth while naming them to build interest in faces.
  • Place a steel plate or mirror in front of baby during tummy time so they can see a face (their reflection) and will stay engaged longer.
  • When talking to baby, exaggerate your facial expressions - wide eyes, big smiles, raised eyebrows - to keep them fascinated by your face.
