Lifts head briefly when lying on tummy

What to Expect

Baby should be able to lift head for 1-2 seconds when placed on stomach. This is the beginning of neck muscle development.

Warning Signs

Cannot lift head at all by 2 months; Head always falls back; Very stiff or very floppy muscles

At-Home Strategies

  • Place baby on your chest while lying down so they can lift their head to see your face. Do this 2-3 times daily for 1-2 minutes.
  • Lay baby on a soft mat or towel on the floor. Place a colorful dupatta or bright toy in front at eye level to encourage head lifting.
  • During diaper changes, let baby lie on tummy for 30 seconds while you sing or talk to them from above.
  • Hold baby on your lap facing outward, supporting their chest with your hands, encouraging them to lift head to look around.
  • Place a small rolled cloth under baby's chest during tummy time to provide support and make it easier to lift head.
